Friendly House Distance Learning Support: Spots and Scholarships still available

There are still spots and scholarships available for the Friendly House in-person distance learning support program. Read more below and click here to go to the enrollment portal.

Friendly House is working to support all working families and asks that any family who feels the price for their family income is unaffordable to apply for a scholarship, even if they do not meet the criteria on the application. The pandemic is an atypical time and there is more support and funding available. Learn more about Oregon’s Enrollment Related Day Care program, and how to apply for a scholarship: EDRC. You can view the scholarship form here and for more scholarship information, please email scholarships@friendlyhouseinc.org.

Please let Dan Hupala know if you have any questions, dhupala@friendlyhouseinc.org or 503-935-5282.

Chapman Learning Pods

We want to give you an update on Chapman Learning Pods, an initiative that Anna Truxes and Helen Shum have started as a parent and community-led organizing effort to support families and students through distance learning.

You may have heard about microschools or learning pods in the media or even considered joining one yourself. It is important to know that this project is NOT an effort to simply match parents with one another to form private pods, hire teachers, or start homeschools. Our vision is to organize support in a more inclusive and equitable way. We are working with staff at Friendly House, parents of gap year graduates from Lincoln High School, school administration and staff, the PTA, and community volunteers to pool our financial and volunteer resources for the benefit of all kids at Chapman.

To help and keep up with the latest:

1) Make sure that you are in the Chapman Family Directory and subscribe to the Chapman Parent Mailing List. The school cannot share parent email addresses with us due to privacy laws and we want to reduce the communication burden on teachers.

2) If you are on social media, there is a Facebook group called “Chapman Learning Pods”. We will also post regular updates via the Chimney Flyer.

3) We need parent volunteers to help organize classrooms into groups of 10 (maximum). The more volunteers in each classroom, the smaller our “pods” can be.

We have begun a list of those we think can serve in this role. See our spreadsheet here. If you see your name listed and DO NOT want to be in this role, please take your name off. If you are able to serve, please add your name! We have some classrooms with many parents identified and others which have no parents yet.

Right now, the only requirement for parent leads is to be responsive to email, willing to work with fellow parents in your class, and able to help communicate to classroom families. We will also be asking you to add or suggest questions for an upcoming all-family survey.

We hope that with a robust volunteer base, we can begin organizing outdoor recess and enrichment opportunities soon. We are open to hearing from others about the needs they have and the resources they are interested in contributing.

Thanks everyone!

Anna & Helen

Friendly House Back-to-School-ish Supply Drive

“Back-to-School” will definitely look different this year, but we still want to support and celebrate a return to learning! Friendly House, our neighborhood non-profit community school, is holding a Back-to-School-ish Supply Drive to help parents, students and teachers feel prepared and able to focus on other important areas of need. Your donations of supplies, money or time will support local students facing economic hardship by providing school supplies directly to them at home for Oregon’s distance learning 2020 school start. If all students are well equipped, a more equal learning environment is created and self esteem is boosted.

Supplies will be distributed by volunteers to highest need students at Chapman Elementary, Metropolitan Learning Center and West Sylvan Schools. Your support will help secure books, paper, notebooks, rulers, pencils, scissors, calculators, glue, art supplies, face masks, sanitizer, wipes and other supplies to make at home distance learning more equitable and accessible to all children.

Please consider donating some of these supplies or contributing to their purchase.

– white board
– dry erase markers
– eraser or cloth to erase whiteboard
– scissors
– crayons/markers
– glue sticks
– pencils
– manipulatives (depends on the grade)
– folder (to keep all their papers in)
– a pouch or a supplies box to keep everything in one place and organized
– headphones
– Pencil sharpener

Register for Kindergarten Online

If you have a child who will be 5 years old by September 1, please register for kindergarten! To register, go to pps.net/kinderenroll. The process takes 20-30 minutes and school staff will follow up with you later in the summer. With schools closed, online registration is the easiest option, but paper options will be available soon. You don’t need to register if your child attends a PPS Head Start or Pre-Kindergarten program.

Early Enrollment for Kindergarten open now–Help spread the word!

Kindergarten enrollment for 2020-21 opens online in February. Click the link below to enroll online. You can visit or contact the school office for more information.

Connect to Kindergarten 2020/21

FEBRUARY 11 | 9:00 AM OR 6:00 PM | CHAPMAN AUDITORIUM

Chapman will host two Connect to Kindergarten sessions on February 11. This is a time for parents to learn about Chapman and the Kindergarten program. We will be having a morning session from 9:00 – 10:00 AM and then an evening session at 6:00 PM. Both sessions will be in our auditorium and will conclude with a school tour. Childcare will not be available for these sessions. We will also have a spring event later in the year in which incoming kindergartners will be invited to participate.

Why Enroll Early

Enrolling early helps project class sizes and make staffing decisions that are typically done earlier before the majority of registration is complete, before the start of the school year. This is where we need your help. Help us enroll students early so that we can ensure all Chapman students receive a quality education and have the chance to experience the love of learning. Please help spread the word.
