Pronoun Pins for Everyone

School Counselor Ariel Frager would like to give students the opportunity to make pins that clearly state their pronoun preference. She has put together a Donors Choose project to purchase a button maker to make pronoun pins for everyone at Chapman. Read more below and show your support and donation here.

From Ms. Frager’s project:

The students at CES are in kindergarten through fifth grade in an economically diverse urban school. My students are funny, charming and hardworking. As a school, we strive to help foster both the intellectual development of our students as well as their social and emotional development in order to help them grow to be their very best selves.

This project will support my school’s mission to ensure that all students feel welcome and included by providing all students, staff, and visitors the opportunity to wear a button that clearly defines their pronouns.

Dining for Dollar$ – November

Raise money for Chapman by eating food from pre-set neighborhood restaurants.  Dine with friends and family, order take out, and spread the word. Restaurants will donate a portion of their day’s proceeds back to Chapman. Let’s eat! We have already raised $2200 so far this school year.  Let’s keep it going!

PASTA, PASTA, PASTA! This month is all about Italian food. I did not know that it is believed that pasta originated from China. I do know that I particularly love the Italian cuisine at our Dining for Dollar$ restaurants this month – Grassa and Justa Pasta.

NW 23rd & Quimby

Monday, November 11 (NO SCHOOL DAY) – Grassa will be donating 15% of all day’s sales to Chapman. There is no school that day so keep that in mind as you enjoy Grassa cuisine anytime between 11 AM and 10 PM. No question it is reasonably priced and beloved by many. Grassa is located at the corner of NW 23rd and Quimby.

1326 NW 19th

Tuesday, November 19 – Justa Pasta will be donating 10% of all day’s sales to Chapman. Like Grassa, it is affordably priced for our neighborhood and well loved. How it differs is that it feels like a hideaway, a neighborhood gem few tourists know about. Last time Justa Pasta participated in a Chapman dining night was 2015 so let’s show them how much we love having Justa Pasta back. It is open for lunch from 11:30 AM – 3:00 PM and again from 4:30 – 8:30 PM for dinner. The space is smaller than Grassa, FYI, so take out might make most sense especially if your group is large. Take out orders can be called in at 503-243-2249. Justa Pasta is located at 1326 NW 19th (between Overton and Pettygrove).

Dining for Dollar$ – October

Raise money for Chapman by eating food from pre-set neighborhood restaurants.  Dine with friends and family, order take out, and spread the word. Restaurants will donate a portion of their day’s proceeds back to Chapman. Let’s eat!

October brings two Dining for Dollar$ opportunities. Besides the event details, I’d also like to draw attention to the owners who you will get a chance to meet. Tap & Table’s Travis grew up in the Chapman neighborhood and played regularly at Wallace Park. Travis is passionate about giving back to his childhood neighborhood whether it be to Chapman or supporting the efforts of local citizens that volunteer to keep our streets clean. The Hostel Cafe’s Jim and Britta live, work, and raise their 2 young children at the NW International Hostel which has been open to travelers from around the world for the last 20+ years.  Jim and Britta are incredibly generous with their time and money when it comes to helping the community whether it’s being grill master at the Hillside Soccer Club Jamboree or leading the efforts of hosting free concerts at Wallace or Couch parks in the summer. In a way, it’s a good feeling to not only know that local restaurants want to support Chapman but also that we as a community can support them as well.

October 9 | NW 23rd (between Raleigh and Savier)

Wednesday, October 9 – Tap & Table is generously donating 40% of the day’s sales back to Chapman. It’s a great family friendly neighborhood restaurant known for tasty burgers, beer selection, and even cauliflower elotes…definitely curious to try ’em. There’s a kid’s corner, TV’s for sports, and a comfortable vibe to the whole place. Grab a meal to go (grubhub option off their website) or dine in. Owner Travis grew up behind Chapman and attended Chapman, Cathedral, West Sylvan, and Jesuit.  Ask to see his little league picture taken at Wallace Park.

October 23 | NW 18th & Glisan

Wednesday, October 23 – Hostel Cafe will be donating 15% of the day’s sales back to Chapman as well as 100% of all raffle ticket sales towards a free night at their 50 acre ZigZag Mountain Farm getaway. Only a $5 raffle ticket. Order at the counter and dine on sandwiches, burgers, and more. I personally enjoy their BLT and Salmon Burger. To top it all off, customers will be treated to old-time fiddle tunes, mountain songs, bluegrass and early country by our very own Kindergarten Teacher Mr. Melling and his wife Karen. Additional special guest Chapman Mom and neighborhood fiddle teacher Olivia Horgen Olivia will not only provide accompaniment but will also perform with some Chapman students. Performances start a bit after 6 PM.

Chapman kindergartner teacher Mr. Melling and his wife Karen will be performing at the Hostel Cafe on October 23rd at 6 PM.
Chapman parent Olivia Horgen will provide accompaniment to performances at the Hostel Cafe on October 23rd at 6 PM.

Coming up: Run for the Arts on Oct. 4

October 4 | 1:00 – 1:30 PM | Wallace Park

Run for the Arts, a fundraising jog-a-thon, is Chapman’s biggest fundraiser dedicated purely to to arts. Every year, funds from Run for the Arts pay for artists in residencies for each grade level, needed supplies, and arts-based assemblies during the year, such as Art Ball. The funds have been used to bring professional performances featuring music and dance, story telling, and drama; to buy musical instruments; and to replace sound equipment in the auditorium. The 4th/5th grade musical this year will be supported by Run for the Arts. Funds raised via this event can only be spent on arts education, and cannot be redirected toward other needs within the school. The funds are managed and dispersed by Young Audiences

Last year Run for the Arts raised $18,000 for Chapman. We hope for another successful fundraiser and a fun event for the students. Packets have been sent home with students. Please bring the forms back to school on Oct. 4th to record the student’s laps. The fundraising and collection period will extend until the first week of November.

VOLUNTEER

October 4 | 12:30 – 1:30 PM | Main Steps

About 12-15 volunteers are needed to help students count their laps. No need to sign up–meet Mr. Studt at 12:30 PM at the front steps of the school on October 4th.

Thank you for your support! We are really looking forward to an amazing (and possibly less muddy) run this year!
